Obesity, Energy Balance and Its Regulation
نویسنده
چکیده
This review is based on several studies that have advanced our understanding of overweight and obesity from the point of view of energy balance and its regulation. There is no doubt that physical activity plays a key role in the prevention and therapy of obesity and it is, therefore, an indispensable component of healthy life style. However, a full consensus on an “optimal” physical activity does not exist at present. This is attributable to individual variations in dispositions, mostly subject to heredity, that modulate changes in the energy balance. To this end, it is necessary to understand these individual differences in order to prescribe an effective programme of physical activity and to instill positive changes in the life style of an individual.

Leptin is a 16-kD protein which is secreted from white adipocytes and, its discovery has generated enormous interest in the regulation of energy balance. Leptin has been implicated in the regulation of food intake, energy expenditure, and whole-body energy balance in animals and human. Plasma leptin levels correlate with fat storages and respond to changes in energy balance. It was initially pr...

It has a special role in control of carbohydrate...

The prevalence of obesity has been increasing at a rapid rate over the last few decades. Although the primary defect can be attributed to an imbalance of energy intake over energy expenditure, the regulation of energy balance is now recognized to be complex. Adipose-tissue factors play a central role in the control of energy balance and whole-body fuel homoeostasis. The regulation of adipose-ti...

Energy is a concept of universal importance. In applying it to body weight regulation, the focus has been on energy balance and how this balance is affected by intakes and expenditures. However, energy is an abstract concept without biological equivalent and applying it to explain body weight regulation has led to various misconceptions and created intellectual obstacles in understanding the ob...
